Introduction

Greetings, merry marmots and lizards! I am Hermes, god of travel, and I proudly present the Neverchanging Atlas: a guide to all the hit hotels and gastric growths of our favorite Wanderer's Library. After my retirement a few thousand years ago, I spent my days touring every notable site I could find within a few thousand light-years of the Main Hall, and now I share my discoveries with you. Take this book with you, visit everything that catches your fancy! There's even a companion notebook for journaling your adventures (available in my shop).

How to use this book

Each page lists one site of interest. They are listed by function first, alphabetically second. An entry goes as follows:

Location Name: The full name of the place, or what it is best known as.
Coordinates: What shelf is it nearest? What subdimension does it call home? At the very least, in which vague direction should one travel to hopefully reach their destination?
Description: A poetic reenactment of my experiences there, or maybe just a couple sentences describing its general appearance. I like being unpredictable.
Accessibility: Are humans allowed? Is it wheelchair accessible? What challenges could possibly face you visiting this place?

The Entries

The First Cairn

The First Cairn

Coordinates: N 0.0 ° E 0.0 °, Main Hall

Description: In the mosaic flooring of the Library's Main Hall, one can find a single tessera extruding from the ancient art below. This singular tile has amassed a remarkable mythology around it, as the Library's architects make no errors. In these folk tales, it is said to be the Library's point of origin; an irregular tile placed to mark the beginning of our history. Others insist it denotes the burial place of the Serpent, upon which the entire Library was built.

These stories have been criticized by both Library and mosaicist scholars, who claim they romanticize a meaningless irregularity among infinite shelves. Regardless, the First Cairn, simple as it may be, rouses a certain nostalgia and pride for the Library's past; a significant achievement on its own.

Accessibility: All wanderers have passed by here, knowingly or not. Visit if you do not remember.

Flesh & Freakfast

Flesh and Freakfast

Coordinates: The Hidden Nest, between Old Wallow's Shelf and the Lyre of Ammon, about fifteen day's travel from the Main Hall neathward. You'll know when you're close by the sound of heartbeats.

Westward Ice Fields

Westward Ice Fields

Coordinates: TBA

Description: Christened by the cryokinetic sorcerer Wynsan Westmeath, the Westward Ice Fields lie due East of the Sea of Words, approaching the everwinter Shelves 82 and 83J. The fields have been described as nigh-infinite, with harsh winds deflecting any wayward explorer. However, if one were to penetrate the glacial barrier, they may find icebergs filled with paper and bookshelves encased in frost. It is said that the ice contains knowledge incomprehensible to the contemporary wanderer, and stories that have yet to be written. Once every seven or so reshelvings, the front-most icecaps will collapse, hurling the texts into the waters below. A mad scramble inevitably ensues — wanderers converge on the books like piranhas, with naught but the odd book cover left floating to shore. As of writing, the dangers of these fields remain undocumented, and with luck, any curious wanderers will not venture too far, lest they succumb to the frigid prose.

How to submit an entry

WIP Notes:
- coordinates can be anything, it doesn't have to be a literal coordinate so long as it gives the reader a vague idea of how they would get there
- try to keep descriptions under three paragraphs
- accessibility here is kinda general, it doesn't just mean "is it accessible for the blind etc" it can also mean "what species are banned from visiting" or "should you wear something special to go there"
- try to keep alphabetical order when submitting
- this page is for original locations, rather than pre-established ones in Library lore. That being said, all these settings are free to be used in any story. If you see one that you particularly like, why not write a story featuring the location!
