Notebook of the Spiral Poet

Diogenes taught me cynicism.
And while the rest of the world
tells me to
try to find the good
in every living
thing
and everybody around you,
I just can't help
but continue to stare—-
to stare at how their noses are
just a bit off;
crooked as if broken, and then
healed back improperly
How their pupils are dilated to
make their eyes appear as an
inky abyss
How when they smile it’s just
a bit too wide,
a bit too sincere,
and how it reveals just too many teeth.
Their words sickeningly sweet like honey
yet viscous like tar.
Their skin soft
But not warm
No not warm, not warm enough.

The Cynic spoke to me
during the times I was tricked
and deceived.
He told me
Be warned—
We are driven forward
over others
by our own
selfish desires.
These
people
will look at you not as a fellow man,
but as something they can use
something they can exploit
and they will not care how it affects you,
so long as it helps them.
They will lie
They will sob and beg and wail
but know that they hold their fingers crossed
behind their backs.
